The incident happened on Thursday, May 25 just before 2:30 p.m., when an individual made a false report that led to a large police response near the lower area of Main Street in Irvington, according to Irvington Police.

After the false report was made, Irvington officers responded to the area and set up a safety perimeter with the help of police from Tarrytown and Dobbs Ferry.

After a preliminary investigation was conducted, authorities determined that the report was a hoax and no immediate danger was posed to the public.

Despite this, Irvington Police said that such hoaxes, known as "swatting incidents," can pose "serious risks to public safety."

"They divert resources from genuine emergencies and can potentially result in harm or injury to innocent individuals," the department added.

Police are now pursuing all leads with partners from various law enforcement agencies to find the person who made the false report.

In a statement released on social media, Irvington Police Chief Francis Pignatelli thanked residents for taking the incident in stride.

"We understand incidents like these can cause anxiety and concern within our community," Pignatelli said, adding, "I want to express my sincere appreciation to the residents and people in the area who promptly cooperated with law enforcement during the incident."
